Queen Creek Files Application with ACC to Improve the Sossaman and Germann Intersection

Post Date:04/30/2026 8:26 am

The Town of Queen Creek has filed an application with the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) to advance improvements at the Sossaman and Germann intersection, a regionally significant corridor with unique infrastructure considerations.

The intersection falls within the area limits of the Town of Queen Creek, City of Mesa and Maricopa County, and includes a Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) crossing. Design approval is required by the ACC, who has exclusive power and jurisdiction over each railroad arterial crossing.

By 2030, over 54,300 vehicles, including public transportation and emergency services vehicles, are predicted to travel through the existing intersection daily.  The Town’s proposed intersection improvements include: Sossaman and Germann Design concept plan

  • Connecting Germann Road between Sossaman Road and Rittenhouse Road (with ultimate connectivity from Interstate 10 to Pinal County
  • Adding a signalized intersection
  • Widening Germann Road to three lanes in each direction
  • Widening Sossaman Road to two lanes in each direction
  • Constructing an at-grade railroad crossing with safety features such as flashing lights and crossing arms

“Improving this intersection is important for enhancing safety and traffic flow for the region,” said Queen Creek Mayor Julia Wheatley. “Not only do we have motorists from within our Town, we have a significant number of vehicles traveling through our community each day. Improving this intersection requires additional steps due to the railroad crossing and brings unique factors as a result of residential, commercial and industrial development, schools and the Mesa Gateway Airport in the surrounding vicinity. The timing for this improvement is crucial as the Southeast Valley continues to grow and funding is available through Maricopa County Proposition 479. We appreciate the community’s continued interest in improving this intersection and encourage residents to share their input as part of this process.”

Design and construction costs are estimated to be between $24 - 28 million. Funding for construction of the intersection improvements is included in Proposition 479 – up to $18 million, with remaining funding to be provided by the Town. Grade separating Germann Road (building a bridge) would be cost prohibitive, nearly doubling the costs; grade separating the entire intersection would triple the costs and have negative impacts to the surrounding neighborhoods.
