On June 16, 2026, Queen Creek Fire and Medical responded to a reported garage fire at the 21000 block of east Timberline Road. The fire was upgraded to a working fire prior to the first units arriving on scene and ultimately a first alarm fire.
26 units responded from Queen Creek, Mesa and Gilbert fire departments through the automatic aid system.
Responding units utilized the water supply on their trucks and were initially unable to secure water from the hydrants adjacent to the home. Due to the redundancy built into the system, fire crews accessed two additional hydrants, one to the east and one to the west, less than 600 feet from the home, to secure an active water supply.
Once the initial hydrant did not work, Town utility crews were contacted. The utility representative was able to restore water to the hydrant closest to the home, as well as two additional hydrants to the northeast. One additional hydrant was damaged and not operable that night.
During the course of the fire, six hydrants were accessed by firefighters or utility crews with five of the six ultimately available to provide water (three were needed for the fire).
All hydrants in the neighborhood were tested on June 17. Of the 51 hydrants tested, the two from the previous night were the only hydrants requiring repair. The cause of the damage is unknown; crews were able to repair both hydrants onsite on June 17.
Of the three hydrants that were operable during the fire, one had a broken stem (noted above as fully repaired the following day) and two valves were off. There is no indication Town staff turned off the valves.
1,350 of the Town’s hydrants have been inspected since late fall. All of the Town’s hydrants will be inspected by the end of the year.
If residents are aware of damage to a hydrant, they are encouraged to report it though the Town’s SeeClickFix webpage.
There were no reported injuries, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
