Swim Lessons
Queen Creek residents and non-residents can register for swim lessons at the Queen Creek Recreation & Aquatic Center. Morning and evening lessons are available, each lasting 30 minutes and meeting eight (8) times per session.
First Day Swim Test Procedure
To simplify the registration process, participants will register for a swim lesson time slot instead of a swim lesson level. On the first day of each session, our certified swim instructors will evaluate each child’s swimming ability and assign them to either Swim School or Stroke School and a level based on their swimming competency. After the first day, all swimmers will meet with their assigned instructor. Swimmers may be moved to different levels and instructors throughout the two-week session, depending on their progression through the skills. Parent/Tot and adult lessons are excluded from this process.
Parent/Tot Lessons
Parents are taught how to help their child become comfortable in the water and begin to learn the skills essential to progress into Starfish Swim School. This class is recommended for children ages 6 months to 3 years and all participants must have an adult in the water with them.
Skills include:
-
Getting face wet and breath control
-
Jumping in and submerging
-
Floating on the front and back
-
Locomotion on the front and back with kicking and pulling
Youth Swim Lessons
The Town of Queen Creek utilizes the Starfish Aquatics Institute (SAI) curriculum. These lessons focus heavily on water safety and competency in early classes (Swim School) and stroke development in later classes (Stroke School). Certified instructors will evaluate participants’ swimming ability on the first day of each session and assign them to the appropriate level.
Swim School
The available levels for Swim School and their associated benchmarks are as follows:
-
White Star level - Safe water entries and exits, tuck-and-stand and relaxed submersion. Benchmark skill is relaxed submersion
-
Red Star level - Bobbing, floating and kicking on front and back and wearing a lifejacket. Benchmark skill is jumping into the pool, rolling onto the back and floating for 3-5 seconds.
-
Yellow Star level - Beginner stroke, treading water, rolling from front to back and direction changes. Benchmark skill is swim-roll-swim for 10 yards.
-
Blue Star level - Streamline kicking, swimming underwater, side breathing and body roll. Benchmark skill is side-roll-side swimming with a flutter kick for 5 yards.
-
Green Star level - Over water arm recovery, flutter kicking, treading water, and water competency. Benchmark is jumping into deep water, treading water for one minute and swimming two lengths of the pool on front or back with any arm/leg action.
Stroke School
Stroke School will help participants learn the basics of the 4 swimming strokes: Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly. Participants must be able to demonstrate water competency skills taught in Swim School to participate in Stroke School lessons.
Adult Swim Lessons
Adult swim lessons follow the same curriculum as Starfish Aquatics Institute’s Swim and Stroke School Lessons. Adult classes are often blended with participants presenting a range of skills. Instructors will work with individuals to meet their needs and goals for the program.
Summer Swim Team
Introduce your child to the sport of swimming this summer by joining one of the Town of Queen Creek’s Swim Team programs. Lightning Notification System
If the siren sounds and the strobe light is on, lightning is in the area.
Perry Weather Lightning Notification System
The Perry Weather lightning notification systems are self-contained weather stations that monitor local, real-time conditions. The inclusion of lightning notification systems in the Town’s existing and future parks enables staff to enhance lightning safety awareness among park patrons.
The following procedures are to be followed when lightning has been detected.
Warning Signal:
These systems alert park patrons to nearby lightning through built-in sirens and strobe lights. The system will alert with one 5-second long siren blast when lightning is reported within 10 miles of the unit and the strobe light on top of the unit will start to flash.
All Clear Signal:
When lightning is not detected within 10 miles for 30 minutes, the light will stop flashing and the unit will sound three short blasts to indicate that lightning is no longer detected within 10 miles. The notification system will only activate during the Aquatic Center hours, ensuring that alerts are timely and aligned with the facility's operational hours.
Safety Procedures:
1. Once the warning signal has sounded, all activities at Aquatic Center will be suspended immediately. Patrons and players must exit all bodies of water and pool areas, and it is recommended that they seek shelter in the Recreation & Aquatic Center or in their vehicles.
2. Once the warning signal has sounded indicating that lighting has been detected within 10 miles of the facility, a 30-minute delay will begin before the all clear signal will sound. Please note that after the initial warning signal if there is another lighting strike within 10 miles, the horn will not sound again but the 30-minute delay will restart. Activities may be delayed longer than 30-minutes if there are multiple lightning strikes.
3. Once 30-minutes has passed from the last lightning strike within 10 miles of the Aquatic Center, the all clear signal will sound.
4. All patrons must wait until the all clear signal has sounded before activities may resume.
Caution:
The Perry Weather lightning notification systems help assess the conditions; neither the signal nor the system is intended to guarantee that conditions are safe. If the weather is threatening and no warning signal is heard or seen, use good judgment and clear the facility if deemed necessary.
