Community Assistance Volunteer: Smoke Detector Maintenance Program
Objective: This is a volunteer position with the Queen Creek Fire and Medical department. Initiated by a request for assistance with smoke detectors from residents, volunteers will be trained and scheduled to respond to assist with this service. Volunteers will work in pairs to respond to scheduled service appointments. 'Smoke detectors' is used in this description, but it includes heat detectors and CO detectors.
Supporting the logistics of providing this service assists the department in preventative public safety measures and community education.
Duties: The service provided will vary depending on the request and the situation the volunteers find in a resident’s home. Services may include educating the homeowners on how to test and maintain their smoke detectors in best working condition; maintaining or servicing smoke detectors: changing the batteries and cleaning the detectors; and changing expired or malfunctioning smoke detectors with new ones.
The expectation is a volunteer will provide availability 2 days each month. Any changes to a volunteer’s schedule should be done with as much advance notice as possible. Obvious exceptions would be emergency or illness.
This service will be provided to single family residences in the town of Queen Creek, including homes within the Queen Creek Fire District. Requests from commercial buildings and rental apartments will be referred to a company that performs these services.
Training: There are multiple types of smoke detectors and multiple manufacturers. Each volunteer will receive training on each type of detector and any unique features of the more common manufacturers. Additional training will also be provided on the safe use of the tools and equipment provided to complete the assignments.
Equipment & Uniform: Paired volunteers will be provided with a department vehicle and all the necessary equipment and supplies required to complete the service requests during their scheduled shift. Each volunteer will also be issued a volunteer shirt and hat to be worn while on duty and providing services. Volunteers are expected to wear navy or black pants or shorts and closed toed shoes during their shift.
Qualifications: Volunteers will be representing the Queen Creek Fire and Medical department. It is expected that each volunteer will uphold and advance the reputation the department has worked hard to earn. In many cases the volunteers will be the first and maybe the only interaction between the customer requesting service and the department. The expectation is that volunteers will provide a positive experience in a professional manner with each interaction.
This recruitment is for regular, ongoing volunteers and will require extensive background check including drug & alcohol and driving record screenings.
Recruitment is to maintain 12 volunteers total, or 6 paired teams to support the level of service requests. Currently recruiting 3 volunteers.
Recruitment is also open for ONE administrative position to support this program.
