The Town of Queen Creek has been actively working to improve the Germann and Sossaman intersection, which has regional significance and unique challenges:

  • The intersection falls within the Town of Queen Creek, City of Mesa and Maricopa County
  • Any intersection improvements will include a Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) crossing, requiring approval by the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC)

The Town initiated the design of intersection improvements, which are currently at the 90% phase. Proposed intersection improvements include:

  • Extending Germann from Sossaman to Rittenhouse
  • Signalized intersection
  • Widening Germann to three lanes in each direction
  • Widening Sossaman to two lanes in each direction
  • At-grade railroad crossing through the intersection (similar to Power and Pecos), including rail safety measures at the intersection (flashing lights and arms)

Funding

Design and construction costs are estimated at $24 -28 million. The design is approximately $1.7 million, and cost-shared between Queen Creek, Mesa and Maricopa County.

Funding for construction of the intersection improvements is included in Prop 479 (the half cent transportation sales tax in Maricopa County) – up to $18 million. The remaining funding will be provided through the Town of Queen Creek.

Next Steps

Design approval is required by the ACC, a separate entity from the Town. The ACC has exclusive power and jurisdiction over each railroad arterial crossing.

The Town is in the process of submitting an application to the ACC for consideration. Once a docket is set, residents can submit their support for the intersection improvements directly to the ACC. Sign up below to stay updated on the process.
