The Building Safety division protects the safety of residents and visitors by administering the Town's adopted building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical codes, as well as energy, disabled access regulations, and local and state laws for construction and maintenance of commercial, industrial and residential buildings. These codes set forth the minimum requirements for public health, safety and general welfare through structural strength and stability. Please refer to the Building Codes page for additional information.
Proper use of the building codes are verified by the Town through a three-tiered process - plan review, permit issuance and inspection.
Plan Review
Building plans must be submitted to be reviewed to determine compliance with the building, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical codes set forth in the adopted codes as well as the Town's engineering and planning & zoning requirements.
Permits
Construction permits are issued after review and approval of construction plans. A permit application and plans must be submitted to the Town prior to beginning any construction project. Contact our office to determine if a permit is required for your proposed construction.
Inspections
Once a permit is issued, inspections are required at different phases of a project, and are performed to ensure construction is in accordance with approved plans and Town adopted codes. Inspectors and permit technicians attend regular training to keep up-to-date with construction and technological changes.
